Chemical Peels, Dermabrasion

Chemical or mechanically these remove superficial layers of skin, blemishes, superficial capillary blood vessels and smoothes out scars. The new computerized lasers which allow more precise layer-by-layer skin removal have largely replaced deep dermabrasion and deep peels. Light to medium chemical peels still remain a valuable tool for the treatment of pigmentation, skin discoloration and short term improvement of fine wrinkles.

MicroDermabrasion is a new and popular superficial peel method. More precise and predictable than light peels, the recovery period is only 12 - 48 hours. It is a superior treatment for those with acne, and is useful for treatment of stubborn dark spots that do not respond to bleach creams.

Advantages
Simple to perform, have a good safety record, short recovery time and are less expensive than equivalent laser treatments.

Disadvantages
For light peels and microdermabrasion, an initial series of 3 to 6 treatments at 1 - 3 month intervals is often needed. The results are best suited for acne, large pores, pigmentary problems and dull, muddy complexions. They are less effective for bad wrinkles and scars than laser. Deep or heavy peel treatments are less precise than comparable laser treatments, with more risks of complications.

Collagen, Fat and Other Implants

Certain materials, including small amounts of your own fat, or artificially prepared, human-like collagen is injected directly into wrinkles and certain depressed scars, smoothing them out. It can be done independently or in combination with other procedures. Collagen and fat are absorbed by the body and retreatments are needed at six to 18 month intervals. SoftForm is one of several permanent implants used for deeper wrinkles and lip augmentation.

Advantages
Simple procedures with excellent and immediate results, minimal discomfort. Cosmetically acceptable appearance, generally in 12 to 24 hours.

Disadvantages
Limited to certain types of small and intermediate wrinkles in certain locations, particularly around the mouth, lips, chin and forehead.

Alpha Hydroxy Rejuvenating Creams

Alpha Hydroxy acids occur naturally in many fruits. When applied regularly and long-term over aged skin, they cause gentle peeling and stimulate production of new collagen. Over time, the skin becomes a little thicker and more elastic with a lighter tint. These changes give the skin a more healthy, youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Creams range from eight to 25 percent in strength and are made for our patients by a pharmaceutical company under a "private label," keeping the cost very low (less than $5 to $10 for a one-month supply).
